Over the last month the provincial government has stated their intention to engage in a “consultation period” with public sector unions and employers on the notion of wage restraint. These provincial “consulations” will be taking place in Toronto between August 9th and October 1st.

After these “consultations”, we hope there will be more clarity around the province’s expectations, and what effect, if any, they will have on local bargaining. In the meantime, the parties have agreed to suspend bargaining until early November. We will meet in mediation in the first week of November to continue to try and reach a settlement.

According to the agreement reached between the parties, the former collective agreement will remain in effect up to and including November 15th.

After extensive deliberations and consulation, your Bargaining Team has decided to call for a Strike Mandate Vote from the membership. The team remains committed to bargaining a fair agreement, and hopes that we will be able to reach a deal in mediation with the Employer on August 9-10.

A strong mandate will show the Employer that the membership will not accept a deal that includes pro-rating concessions and compensation freezes. With a strong mandate, your team is confident that they will be able to fight back concessions and reach a fair contract. More information on the outstanding issues can be found here and here.

After a week of deliberation, the Employer has requested that a No Board Report be filed. The issuance of the report will set a strike/lockout deadline, and the parties have agreed to meet in mediation on August 9th and 10th.

We will continue to update members in the coming days, and as new information becomes available.
